Symptoms

Elm Admin wants an alert based on *error*severity*state* in the current SQL log file.

SQL Log File Default Paths: SQL 2008 *:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LOG

  • SQL 2008 *:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LOG
  • SQL 2005 *:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG
  • MSDE\SQL 2000 *:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG

Resolution

Create a File Monitor by using the Monitor Item Wizard.

In the upper left-hand part of the ELM Console, right click on Monitoring | New | Monitor Item

  1. Select Next, choose the File Monitor item from the dropdown list.
  2. Next page, File Monitor Search Definition enter the path to the SQL log files.
  3. Next page, File Monitor Search Definition enter the following variable *error*severity*state*
  4. Next page, Select the Monitor Action choose the desired monitor action, Create New Alert Entry is selected by default.
  5. Next page, Test the Monitor Item select the Agent that you want to run the test against and press the Start Test button.
  6. Next page, select the Agent Categories that you want the File Monitor assigned to.
  7. Next page, Schedule, setup the schedule interval and hours desired.
  8. Next page, Monitor Name and Description enter a Name and Description, ensure that the checkbox is checked for Enabled.
